A human leg found on a beach in Scotland has been linked to a body that was located in Northern Ireland.

According to Scottish newspaper The Glasgow Times, the limb was found on Prestwick Beach in South Ayrshire at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10.

The outlet reports that police have now identified the remains following an investigation.

According to The Glasgow Times, Irish broadcaster RTE, and the BBC, officials say the human leg belongs to a person who went missing outside of Scotland. The Daily Mail reports that the bone is being linked to a man who went missing from the coastal village of Millisle, Northern Ireland, in May.

The remains were reportedly linked to a body found in Northern Ireland’s Donaghadee Road area on May 21.

“Around 10.45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, we received a report that human remains had been discovered on Prestwick Beach in Ayrshire,” Police Scotland said in a statement, per Glasgow Times

The release added, “The remains have now been identified as those of a missing person from outside of Scotland. The relevant police service has been informed."

Per The Daily Mail, the leg still had a sock and a shoe on and was discovered, "buried under seaweed" by witnesses along with "items of clothing."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) also shared a statement with PEOPLE to confirm the discovery of a body.

"The Police Service of Northern Ireland can confirm that the body found in the Donaghadee Road area of Millisle on Wednesday, May 21, has been identified,” a spokesperson for the PSNI said.

"The remains were determined to be male, and police are engaging with the family of the deceased,” they added. “The death is not being treated as suspicious."

PEOPLE has contacted Police Scotland for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
