Lee made history as the first Hmong American Olympic gymnast. She added another history-making moment to her resumé by winning a gold medal, making her the first Hmong American to do so.

The 18-year-old kept up the American tradition of dominating the women’s gymnastics all-around. The U.S. has won five consecutive golds for this event since 2004.

Lee earned her spot in the individual all-around by picking up the highest difficulty score in the world for her performance on the uneven bars during the qualifying round.

Coming into this competition, I didn't even think that I could be competing for a gold medal. I was coming to compete for a silver medal. To be here, it's crazy.

The Minnesota native finished with 57.433 to secure her win, with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade in second place and the Russian Olympic Committee’s Angelina Melnikova in third.

Lee credits her family as some of her biggest supporters. Her family couldn’t attend the Olympics due to COVID-19 protocols, but Lee celebrated her win with them over FaceTime.

Speaking to Al Roker and Craig Melvin on TODAY, Lee’s father John said he built a balance beam in their backyard for his daughter to practice on. That’s dedication!

In 2019, John was in an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Lee also lost an aunt and uncle to COVID-19 and has suffered injuries, but she persevered to get to the podium.

The individual event finals will take place Aug. 1 through Aug. 3. After the Olympics, Lee plans on attending Auburn University.
