Bachelor star Colton Underwood is ready to live his truth. The former football player came out as gay on Good Morning America after a tumultous year of self-discovery.
Underwood told host Robin Roberts that since coming to terms with his sexuality, he’s “the happiest and healthiest” he has ever felt.
He said he knew he was “different” as a child and used to pray to God to “take the gay away.” He also discussed feeling suicidal as an adult.

Now, with the support of his loved ones, Underwood is ready to embrace himself — though he “still has a lot to work through.”

While leading season 23 of The Bachelor (when his virginity was a focal point of the show), Underwood gave the final rose to Cassie Randolph.

They didn’t get engaged but dated until May 2020. After the split, Randolph filed a restraining order against Underwood.

She accused him of stalking her, putting a tracking device on her car and showing up to her apartment and parents’ house unannounced.
In November, Randolph dropped the restraining order and said in a statement to PEOPLE that the exes “were able to reach a private agreement.”

During his GMA interview, Underwood publicly apologized to Randolph and the rest of the women on his Bachelor season.
Underwood isn’t the only season 23 cast member to come out. Contestant Demi Burnett confirmed she is bisexual on season 6 of Bachelor in Paradise.
“As firm believers in the power of love, we celebrate Colton’s journey in the LGBTQIA+ community every step of the way,” Bachelor producers said in a statement following the interview.
Underwood’s reality TV days may not be over. Variety reports that a Netflix show following his life as an openly gay man is underway, with Olympian Gus Kenworthy as his “gay guide.”
