“Like the rest of the country, I am still reeling from the news,” Lane said.
“You think you know a boy band, you give them your heart, and something like this shakes you to the core,” he added.
The Modern Family guest star continued, “The next thing you know, they’re cutting solo albums or joining ISIS or turning into Joey Fatone. It’s one of life’s cruelest lessons.”
The actor, 59, who recently returned to Broadway’s It’s Only a Play, eventually put on a brave face and offered his fellow heartbroken One Direction fans some advice, no doubt gathered throughout a long history of boy-band appreciation.
“As I like to say, we’ve been Menudo’d once again – but let’s move on,” he said.
