The actress also talks about what she wants to happen next on the TV Land comedy
On Younger, Sutton Foster plays a 40-year-old woman pretending to be in her 20s so she can land a job – and a hunky guy along the way. Her character, Liza, doesn’t know how to set up a Twitter account or understand hip slang.
“I’m like her older sister, mother figure, but I’m letting her do her thing! She’s got to figure it out. That’s what it’s all about, so I step aside. I have no opinions!” Foster, 40, told PEOPLE on Thursday at the opening night of the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas.
“She is a brave, beautiful, strong-ass woman who I admire very much,” she added. “I trust her.”
Foster also opened up about the hysterical latest episode of their TV Land series, which saw Liza and Kelsey (Duff) getting high on MDMA and Manischewitz at a “hot mitzvah.”
“First of all, I’ve never been on Molly, so I had no idea what the hell it was supposed to be like, and I wasn’t prepared to do research. But it was fun,” she said. “We shot that whole hot mitzvah over two days, so we were like in this really cool abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn. I still don’t know where we were. It was wild. The cast, we all genuinely, really love each other, so we had a great time.”
There’s only one episode left in season 1, and things aren’t looking good for Liza and her boyfriend Josh (Nico Tortorella) after she confessed her real age in a drug-laced haze – right after he told her he loved her.
“I think Liza’s hopeful,” Foster said of a reconciliation. “I think Liza has really good reasons behind why she’s doing what she’s doing. She kind of got caught up in it, but I don’t think she’s trying to hurt anybody, and hopefully Josh will be able to see that to get beyond the lie aspect of it.”
Younger airs Tuesdays (10 p.m. ET) on TV Land.
