CBS has found its Supergirl.

Melissa Benoist has been cast as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, for the superhero series of the same name that’s in the works for this fall.

Benoist – last seen in the Oscar-nominated movie Whiplash and on Glee – will play a denizen of Krypton who escaped amid its destruction years ago. Once she arrived to Earth, she hid the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But at 24, she opts to be the hero.

CBS has given a series commitment to Supergirl, a DC Comics character that was first introduced to fanboys and girls in 1959.

CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler told reporters earlier this month that she thinks Supergirl will fit nicely alongside more mature characters like The Good Wife’s Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), Extant’s Molly Woods (Halle Berry), and Madam Secretary’s Elizabeth McCord (T a Leoni).

The last time Supergirl cracked the zeitgeist was in 2007, when she was played by Laura Vandervoort for CW’s Smallville through 2011. Helen Slater also portrayed her for the big screen in 1984.
