The 34-year-old reality star, who appeared on The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise, set the record straight about his financial status during the latest episode of his podcast, Your Favorite Things. “Can I go on the record right here? I will pay for this ring, I promise you. It will come out of my bank account, okay?” Wells told co-host Brandi Cyrus, adding that his “pet peeve” is when fans assume “Sarah pays for everything.” Adams’ declaration came after radio hosts Bobby Bones, Lunchbox and Amy Brown joked during a recent episode of The Bobby Bones Show that Hyland would be “buying the ring.” Their claims annoyed Adams, who works for the same company (iHeartRadio) as the crew. In fact, when he lived in Nashville, they all used to work in the same building. “They’ve been trolling me for years. Years,” Adams said, playing audio from The Bobby Bones Show on his podcast. “It’s one of those things where it’s like, ‘Okay, I get it. You guys don’t like me. I don’t know what I did to you.’ … We’re supposed to be co-workers and friends.” He added, “I guess the thing that grinds my gears the most is, anytime I’ve seen anyone from that show, they’re so nice to me. [They’re] so nice to my face. Like if you’re going to be a dick, be a dick all the time. If you’re going to be nice, be nice all the time. … I just did exactly what they wanted me to do, which is respond to it.” Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for InStyle The Bobby Bones Show team has also criticized Adams for living with Hyland. “He probably had a one bedroom apartment here in Nashville and now he’s living in a mansion with a multimillionaire,” they said. Again, Adams stood up for himself. “I did not live in a one bedroom apartment in Nashville …” he said on Your Favorite Things. “I owned a house then, it was a two-bedroom house!” “Aside from the fact that it’s just kind of mean, what’s funny to me is that it’s all about money for them. It had to be the apartment that I lived in, not the house that I owned. … ‘Yeah they live together, but it’s her house, don’t forget,’ ” Adams said. “If I’ve learned anything throughout my career, it’s that success in life has very little to do with your bank account. You know? And the sooner you realize that, the sooner you’re going to be happy.” How Sarah Hyland’s Boyfriend Wells Adams Helped Her Cope After a Second Kidney Transplant Cyrus was on Adams side — as was Hyland. “I told Sarah, I showed Sarah,” Adams said. “And she was like, ‘I’m f—— going after this guy.’ And I was like ‘Don’t, that’s what they really want.’ ” As for Bones, he appeared to deny having any problems with Adams. “I said no such thing ever,” Bones tweeted, responding to media reports about the engagement ring comments. “Maybe Wells is trying to start something with me for this press. But I like the guy. I got no beef. Actually when all of this below was said, I disagreed with it.” Lunchbox also defended himself. “Slammed? No. Made a comment? Yes.” he tweeted. Wells Adams/Instagram Hyland and Wells first flirted on Twitter in 2016 but didn’t get together until the fall of 2017. They’ve been going strong ever since, and have been living together since August 2018, when Adams moved to L.A. Hyland told PEOPLE that moving in together “brought us closer.” “I don’t think it’s been long enough to discover pet peeves with each other,” the Modern Family star said. “I think we’re in the honeymoon phase of living together. It’s good that nothing is already starting, because then I think that would be a bad sign.” The couple celebrated their one-year anniversary in October 2018. “It’s been really weirdly normal,” Adams told PEOPLE of their relationship. “That question gets asked a lot because you expect the answer to be like, it’s crazy because it’s in the spotlight, but for whatever reason, it’s been really nice and normal and wonderful.”
