In one sense, the friends mentioned in the lyrics to “Opposites Attract” were right: Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat didn’t last, and the 1989 hit was the high point of Abdul’s collaboration with the animated hip hop cat.
But MC Skat Kat got a reprieve from pop culture obscurity last night when Late Late Show host James Corden played him in a live re-creation of the “Opposites Attract” video alongside Abdul.
It’s not so much that anyone ever said, “Hey, we need a version of the ‘Opposites Attract’ video with Paula Abdul dancing with a non-animated cat!” so much as “Hey, they did this thing! And they did a pretty good job with it!”

It’s probably not a surprise that Abdul, 53, could whip out those nearly two-decade-old moves so easily, but may be worth commending Corden, 36, on what a good stand-in Skat Kat he makes.

Those whose favorite part of the “Opposites Attract” video was MC Skat Kat and who have been pining for his return to pop culture should know that his recording career didn’t end with this one song. No, he went on to record an entire album in 1991. And Abdul even appeared in the video for “Skat Strut.”
Much of the rest of the album The Adventures of MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob is up on YouTube, just in case it passed you by back in 1991 and you still feel like you need more Skat Kat in your life.
