Robot-Phobic Ty Burrell Takes a Spin in a Self-Driving Car: 'I Feel So Naked'
The Modern Family star went on a self-driving car test drive for National Geographic's Years of Living Dangerously
Ty Burrell isn’t quite ready for a world full of autonomous robots.
In an exclusive sneak peek at this week’s Years of Living Dangerously, the Modern Family star faces his fear of ‘bots while test-riding a driver-less car.
“After seeing those futuristic self-driving cars I really want to try one out,” says Burrell, 49, in the clip. “But I have to admit: I’m terrified of robots.”
The admitted robot-phobe then gets into a Delphi self-driving car with two engineers from the company. To make sure the ride is safe, an engineer named Matt also joins Burrell to assist if needed — but he’s not allowed to talk. This leads to a hilarious burgeoning bromance between the two. “It’s like we were meant to be buddies!” Burrell quips after asking Matt several questions he doesn’t answer.
But Burrell trades the laughter for genuine shock when the car turns to self-driving mode and he sees how advanced the technology is. The clip explains all the sensors the car has to ensure the safety of the driver and Burrell is incredulous when the car reads that a light turned green and the car sets off.
“I feel so naked,” the actor admits.
Year of Living Dangerously airs Wednesdays (10 p.m. ET) on National Geographic.
