Chong had the audience laughing after his dance with Sharna Burgess and Peta Murgatroyd

After wrapping up his suggestive dance with Sharna Burgess and Peta Murgatroyd on Monday night’s episode of Dancing with the Stars, Tommy Chong capped things off with a suggestive remark to the judges – which had the audience roaring with laughter but left Burgess and Murgatroyd looking mortified.

What was he thinking?!

PEOPLE caught up with the Cheech & Chong star, 76, backstage after the show to ask him just that. And it turns out he’s been reining himself in this whole season – acting out in rehearsals but holding back on the show in the interest of decorum.
