Saved by the Bell: Teen Idols Turned Parents
BAYSIDE CLASS OF '89
It's been more than 20 years since the Saved by the Bell cast (clockwise from left: Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Lark Voorhies, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dustin Diamond and Tiffani Thiessen) ruled the airwaves; now many of the show's iconic child stars are raising children of their own, with Berkley recently welcoming her first baby. Click on to see how they transformed from teen idols to too-cool parents.
Following eight years of marriage, the actress and husband Greg Lauren welcomed their first child, son Sky Cole, in July. "In life there are moments you cherish forever and this is one of them," Berkley, who played Bayside High feminist Jessie Spano, told PEOPLE.
Daughter Harper calls the shots at home, and Thiessen and husband Brady Smith are happy to sit back and watch their 2-year-old grow. "She's not a baby anymore. It's funny," said the actress formerly known as Kelly Kapowski. "From the 12-month to the 15-month mark has probably been her biggest stretch of [milestones]."
When it comes to making professional decisions, Gosselaar, who played troublemaker Zack Morris, draws inspiration from his two children, son Michael, 8, and daughter Ava, 6. "It can be difficult to balance my career and my family, but my family always comes first," says the actor, who married ad exec Catriona McGinn in July (his kids are from a previous marriage to actress Lisa Russell). "Having children has made me mature in ways that I think are positive to my career, and yes, my family does affect the type of work that I accept."
"My mornings are better because I get to see her," Lopez told PEOPLE of life with 2-year-old daughter Gia, the inspiration for his children's book. "I enjoy coming home," adds the Extra host, who portrayed ladies man A.C. Slater and plans to wed fiancée Courtney Mazza this December in Mexico. "No matter how hard of a day I had, I get to see her little face and everything works out."
Despite a long-lasting career, Spelling – who made several appearances as Screech's nerdy girlfriend Violet – considers her family with husband Dean McDermott her greatest accomplishment. The actress-turned reality star welcomed her fourth child, son Finn, in August, the latest addition to her brood which includes almost-1-year-old Hattie (pictured in December 2011), 4-year-old Stella and 5-year-old Liam. "We feel truly blessed that another little angel has found us," she said.
It's like mother, like daughter for stylista Remini and her chic 8-year-old, Sofia. "She's fabulous," the actress, who played Zack's Malibu Sands co-worker and eventual love interest Stacy Carosi, told PEOPLE, adding that the pair enjoy flipping through fashion magazines together. "That's my favorite moment because it's really just between her and I."
