When newcomer Shanice Williams learned that she had landed the lead role of Dorothy in NBC’s production of The Wiz Live!, she had no idea that it was just the first of many amazing experiences she would have.

“The last two weeks of my life, since I found out I got the role of Dorothy have been super exciting,” Williams reveals in an exclusive video chronicling her whirlwind press tour. “Everyone’s calling me, saying how much they’re so proud of me.”

Of course, it wasn’t just Williams’ family, friends and former drama teachers that were thrilled to meet the new Dorothy – the rising star also got plenty of congratulatory hugs from Carson Daly when she appeared on Today.

“This is always what I’ve wanted to do,” Williams told Today‘s longtime weatherman Al Roker, “so I guess I’m ready!”

Still, one of the biggest morning shows in the country can’t quite compare to the other honor that Williams received: An official proclamation from the mayor of her hometown, Rahway, New Jersey, celebrating her incredible achievement, plus a town-wide celebration.

And before she even had a chance to party with her friends and family, it was time for Williams to head off to Los Angeles for the musical spectacular’s first table read.

“I’ve never done anything like this before. I don’t know what’s in store,” Williams said on her way to the Universal Studios lot. “So, I’m just excited to take everything one step at a time.” Down the Yellow Brick Road, of course.

The Wiz Live! airs Dec. 3 on NBC.
