Danai Gurira can’t say much about the upcoming season of The Walking Dead, but what she can say is tantalizing.

“It’s an amazing season,” Gurira tells PEOPLE of season 6, which premieres Sunday on AMC. “It’s very rich and deep and full of everything you can imagine.”

Season 5 ended last spring with disharmony between the show’s core group of survivors and the other residents of their adopted home of Alexandria, and Gurira says it has been a blast seeing how that drama plays out in the new season.

“We are working really, really hard and the scripts are riveting and gut-wrenching,” says the actress. “It’s powerful storytelling that we get to work on every day. It’s powerful stuff that’s coming out of the writer’s room.”
