The Voice instant save is back – and made for a drama-filled live elimination show Tuesday as three artists fought for the final spot in the Top 10.

Just one night after the remaining 12 artists delivered a string of well-received performances, the artists once again stood onstage, although this time it was to learn their fates.

Host Carson Daly announced the artists who were safe throughout the first two-thirds of the show, until it finally became clear that only Team Adam Levine – who was enjoying his last evening as PEOPLE’s reigning Sexiest Man Alive – would be spared potential elimination.

After Daly ticked off the names of the safe artists, the bottom three were eventually revealed as Sugar Joans of Team Pharrell Williams, Jessie Pitts of Team Blake Shelton and Ryan Sill of Team Gwen Stefani – who were all saved by their coaches last week after failing to win America’s votes outright.

As in previous seasons, the trio then had to perform one final song before viewers took to Twitter to vote for the artist they wished to save in the five-minute window at the end of the show.

Pitts, an Alabama farm girl, performed first, delivering an understated rendition of “Gravity” and blowing a kiss to the audience at its conclusion. After she sang, Shelton urged America to vote for the music student, whom he called “the sweetest person ever.”

“Somebody like Jessie is very important to this competition because she occupies a space no one else occupies,” Shelton said during his pitch. “It’s important for her to be on this show and she deserves to be on this show. She’s a great singer.”

Up next, Joans delivered a spirited version of the Whitney Houston classic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” that had her coach fired up.

“We have a long future together,” Williams told her just before the voting window ended. “I’m glad I got this job, because I got to meet you.”

Team Gwen’s Sill closed out the bottom three performances, and the upbeat Virginia native got in touch with his sensitive side while singing “More Than Words.”

“This is so intense!” Stefani declared after he sang, acknowledging the pressure of the moment. “You keep getting better before everyone’s eyes. Everyone’s seeing how incredibly talented you are.”

Turns out America did notice his talent – and voted to save Sill to round out the Top 10. He joins teammates Anita Antoinette and Taylor John Williams.

Stefani and Levine are the only artists with three artists advancing to the Top 10, with Team Adam composed of Chris Jamison, Matt McAndrew and Damien.

Team Blake consists of Craig Wayne Boyd and Reagan James, while Team Pharrell now includes DaNica Shirey and Luke Wade – who flubbed lyrics during his performance the previous evening, but was nonetheless voted through.

Earlier in the show, Daly also announced a new feature this season that’s good news for any contestant eliminated from Tuesday’s show onward. He revealed that after the three finalists are revealed later in the season, all eliminated contestants from the Top 12 will return to perform one last song and give America a chance to vote to add one singer as an additional wild card finalist.

The Top 10 will perform Monday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
