The View Advertisers Pull Out Following Backlash Against Co-Host Joy Behar Mocking Miss America Nurse Monologue
Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best, two of The View‘s advertisers, have pulled the plug on the talk show in the wake of the recent backlash that erupted on Monday when co-host Joy Behar made controversial comments about nurses on-air.
“Johnson & Johnson values and appreciates nurses and we respect the critical role they play in our healthcare system. We disagree with recent comments on daytime television about the nursing profession, and we have paused our advertising accordingly,” reads a statement Johnson & Johnson posted on the company’s Facebook page Wednesday. “We’re committed to raising the level of awareness about the skill and knowledge that the profession requires, and we send our thanks today and every day to the millions of nurses who touch the lives of patients and their families. #NursesHeal #NursesUnite.”

On Thursday, Eggland’s Best also took to Facebook to post a similar statement that reads: “Eggland’s Best appreciates nurses and values the important role they play in family health. In light of the comments about the nursing profession recently made on daytime television we will no longer be advertising on the show in question. Eggland’s Best believes in providing consumers the freshest, best tasting and most nutritious egg possible and we thank the millions of nurses across the country who work to improve the lives of their patients and families.”
A day after they released their official statement, Johnson & Johnson also shared one of their commercials that features nurses, writing: “It takes a special person to be a nurse. It’s a perfect day for us to share one of our most-loved ads that celebrates the care, the healing touch, and the commitment of nurses everywhere. #NursesUnite #NursesHeal.”
On Monday, The View co-hosts were discussing the recent Miss America pageant when co-host Behar questioned why contestant Kelley Johnson wore a stethoscope during her monologue, which she performed during the talent competition portion of the show on Sunday.
After facing serious backlash on social media for the comments, including the creation of hashtag #NursesUnite, used by Johnson & Johnson in their statements, Behar apologized on Wednesday’s broadcast.
“I didn’t know what the hell I was talking about,” said Behar, 72, who also said that she was “just not paying attention” and didn’t realize Johnson was a nurse, thinking perhaps the pageant contestant was in costume.
Following her apology, the American Nurses Association issued a statement addressing Behar’s “disturbing” decision to use “her national platform and influence to mock Miss America contestant Kelley Johnson,” but that they were pleased she apologized.
“This is a great opportunity for those in the media to highlight the important, lifesaving role of nurses and to show them the respect they deserve,” concluded ANA president Pamela F. Cipriano.
Though she didn’t directly address the controversy regarding the comments made on The View, the Miss Colorado crown-holder said she was happy to “have everyone be standing up for our profession and giving them the voice that they deserve.”
ABC declined to comment.
