When Jencarlos Canela found out he was cast for the role of Jesus in Fox’s Easter TV special, The Passion, he was almost taken aback.

“At first when I was told, ‘Hey, would you like to play Jesus?’ It’s a big responsibility” he says in an exclusive teaser for the two-hour musical event, which is produced by Tyler Perry and uses contemporary hits to tell the story of Jesus Christ.

But for producer and music arranger Adam Anders, the 27-year-old actor and award-winning singer-songwriter was the perfect person for the job.

“He encompassed what we wanted in our Jesus,” Anders says about looking for a person who could act and sing live on television.

Canela reveals in the clip that this is a “Grammy-level” performance, but the cast and crew aren’t thinking about awards. Rather, they are focused on the music.

“The music is probably one of the most beautiful things about the show,” Canela says.

The Passion airs March 20 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
