"I thought it was going well, but ultimately didn't work out," Emily Maynard's first reject says

Shortly after depositing his sappy wish in the Love Clock at the Greenbrier in W.Va., Joe Gendreau’s time to impress The Bachelorette‘s Emily Maynard had run out.

Reflecting on his short stint and love non-connection during a conference call from Orlando, the quality control advisor, 27, had this to say.

That date rose just sits and stares at you. Did it affect your game plan or stress you out?
I tried to keep the rose out of mind. I didn’t want to look at it as a challenge and be like, “I really want that rose.” I wanted to see how my time was with her and entertain the idea of being able to hit it off with her. It was a great time. I thought it was going well, but ultimately didn’t work out.

What went wrong?
We really didn’t hit it off with each other. We are in different places in our lives. I was a single, free-spirited individual. She was looking for someone more settled and committed to family and work.

Seemed like the real stumbling block came when she mentioned wanting more children and when your five-year plan didn’t jive with hers.
I agree that altered her decision. I said, “I want to be happy with no regrets.” I think she was more looking for more detail like, “I want to be here with these many kids.” I didn’t take offense. She’s determined in what she wants and she didn’t see that in me.

Wish you could go back and change your answer?
No. That’s something I’d like to achieve. I answered truthfully. That’s me being myself.

Do you want children?
I was not closed-minded about it. I want to have kids and marriage in my life one day, [but] I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

You seemed awfully put on the spot with the love clock.
I was. She was very aware of the clock and planned out her wish. They asked me, “Hey, make a wish right now.” That’s the best I could come up with.

Looking back and now having seen the show, do you think it was the right call?
Whether she made the right decision is on her. After she made her mind up, I was content to move on. I was really happy with everything that happened. I went in open-minded and put myself out there. We just didn’t click. She was very sweet, and I wish her the best. I’m sure she’ll find the right guy.

Do you think that guy is in the group?
My money’s on Jef. He seems like a great guy, a caring individual, and he’s got some money. I’m sure that’s going to put me in a doghouse. Arie and Sean will stick around. And maybe Doug, the guy who got the first impression rose. They’re solid good guys, good character.

You may not have gotten the girl, but she did compare you to Matthew McConaughey. You’ll always have that.
It’s a compliment. He’s a good-looking guy. I think I have a similar attitude. I’m a laid-back guy who likes to have a good time.
