Teen Mom 2's Leah Calvert Addresses the Heartbreaking Drug Dependency Keeping Her from Her Daughters: 'The Person I Used to Be Is Fading Away'
As the reality star leaves to address her problems, she tells her mother: "That person I know I could be ... is just crying for help inside me"
In an exclusive clip from Thursday’s episode of the MTV series, Calvert, 23, says goodbye to her daughters as she prepares to head to a month of drug rehab.
Calvert tells her twin girls, Ali and Aleeah, that she’s leaving tomorrow but will talk to them every day: “I’m going to miss you so much,” she says before the 5-year-olds scamper off to play.
“I have to leave my babies for a month, and I haven’t cried yet,” Calvert tells her mother, Dawn Spears. “I know I have to do this for them. I know I do, because the person I used to be, the happy person I used to be, is fading away.”
Allegations that Calvert struggles with addiction to prescription drugs arose during a court battle between her and ex-husband Corey Simms for custody of the twins. She says that after giving birth to her daughter Adalynn in 2013, she was prescribed pain medication to deal with back pain but has since stopped taking it.
“When I was hurting so bad, I’d take the medication, because I could get up and go. I could take care of my kids. My back wasn’t hurting,” she tells her mother. “I told you guys, ‘I’ve got this medication. I feel like I’m becoming dependent. I can’t take this medication.’ I stopped taking the medication.”
Calvert adds, “That person I know I could be – and I will be again – is just crying for help inside me.”
Calvert and estranged husband Jeremy Calvert’s split is being documented on the current season of the show.
