Taylor Swift Excited to Perform at VMAs
The country star is the first artist confirmed to appear at MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards hosted by Russell Brand
It’s official: Taylor Swift will be taking the stage at MTV’s 2009 Video Music Awards.
The teen country sensation is the first performer to be confirmed for entertainment’s most unpredictable awards show, to be held Sept. 13 in locations around New York City, including Radio City Music Hall.
“I’m so excited that MTV and the VMAs have invited me to perform, because I think this year’s show will be unlike anything they’ve ever done!” says Swift, who will sing a new version of her song “You Belong With Me” from her hit album Fearless.
The appearance will mark the first time Swift, 19, will sing at the Video Music Awards – and fans can expect the unexpected.
“I love incorporating theatrics into my performances,” Swift says, “and the VMAs have always allowed artists to run with that. MTV has been so good to me, and I could not be more excited about this year’s VMAs.”
Speaking on the phone (in bed!) from Los Angeles, Brand said his debut hosting experience proved instructive, joking that controversies seem to follow him wherever he goes. So, what did the Brit take away from emceeing the awards?
“Death threats,” he deadpanned.
While celebrities and MTV executives loved him – “they were great,” Brand says – the British comedian didn’t find fans in George W. Bush supporters after making a crack about the then-president.
