So You Think You Can Dance history was made this week when the judges decided to keep all six remaining dancers and make next week a double elimination. With the season 7’s injury curse striking again — this time keeping Billy Bell from performing Wednesday — the contemporary dancer was automatically in the bottom for Thursday’s results show. B-boy Jose Ruiz and contemporary dancer Robert Roldan joined him.

It was an awesome decision, Mia Michales told PEOPLE after the surprising non-elimination. We couldn t figure it out. We were all stumped for different reasons.

Now, with all six dancers standing, two will be going home next week. “We re going to see the boys from the men, Michaels said.

Nigel Lythgoe agreed that the decision will bring added pressure. In truth, Adechike, Kent and Lauren will probably be the finale three, he said. Robert, Billy and Jose are really going to have to step up.

And that s exactly what they ve been trying to do. Roldan delivered two stellar performances on his 20th birthday this week and Lythgoe attributed his landing in the bottom to the nature of the competition at this stage in the game. This week it was only the numbers question, Lythgoe said. Someone was going to be in the bottom three and it was Robert. He absolutely has the opportunity to come through.

While Roldan s talent as a dancer is undeniable, Ruiz s has been questioned in the past few weeks. With no formal training, the complex choreography has been difficult for him and though the judges say he s been choreographed creatively, his lack of skill is becoming a problem — despite the charming personality that s gotten him this far.

We will lose dancers if it continues this way, said Michaels. I feel like that personality only gets you so far.

And though Lythgoe has been the biggest cheerleader of Ruiz s personality from the start, he agrees that Ruiz needs the steps to back up his charm. It says favorite dancer, said Lythgoe. But what he did in his solo was superb. To send him home on the strength of what he did tonight would have been crazy. –Mussarat Bata
