They don’t call him a star attraction for nothing. Who wouldn’t want Brad Pitt to like them?

Shia LaBeouf, aka He Who Is Not Famous Anymore, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night to talk about the difficulties of filming the World War II epic Fury with Pitt – namely, that the entire male cast really wanted to be his friend.

“We were all vying for his attention,” LaBeouf told Kimmel. “And we all wanted him to like us – it’s like having five dudes on a date with one girl. Everyone’s really trying to get close, all the time.”

LaBeouf appears to be back on track following what could charitably be described as a “difficult year.” Having recently told Ellen DeGeneres that he went through an "existential crisis," the actor credits his mother, Shayna, with pulling him out of it.

Fury, which opens Friday, stars Pitt as a battle-hardened tank commander during WWII and costars LaBeouf, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal and Percy Jackson‘s Logan Lerman. Director David Ayer told PEOPLE in May that he wanted to make “the ultimate tank movie to take a group of guys, put ’em in this claustrophobic environment, and see how they work together as a team.”
