It could be his charming smile, his dreamy eyes or his ability to renovate a house and still look like a top model.

Scott McGillivray may not get the reasons he was picked as Sexy Man of the Week in the new issue of PEOPLE, but he can’t wait to tell his family.

“I can’t wait to surprise my wife with the news,” the HGTV host, 36, tells PEOPLE. “I have to make sure I give her the copy of the magazine before any of her girlfriends see it.”

The host and executive producer of the hit show Income Property – one of the longest-running shows on HGTV to date – is a true family man – and he looks just as good in that role.

“We go to the zoo, go apple-picking, you name it,” he says. “Sabrina [his wife] and my two daughters always come first.”

McGillivray has come a long way to get to this point. At 21, he purchased and renovated his first rental property and owned five by the time he was 23.

He calls himself “a hybrid” – for example, he was school president for his junior and senior year and still managed to make time for hockey, a sport he played for 15 years. “I always try and do it all.”

And when he tries, he never seems to fail.

The family man, who says he feels “most sexy in his tool belt,” still takes a little bit of time to keep up his good looks.

“I love a big steak or seafood dinner, but the next day I’m running outside for miles,” he says. “While of course listening to music. I have to have the music on.” If he’s not out running, he’s at the gym, swimming, boating or surfing in Costa Rica.

Without even having to try, the Sexy Man of the Week still finds time to show how fun he really is. The video of him and wife tearing it apart on the dance floor is a fan favorite. “I guess that one is a little sexy,” he says.

And if your knees aren’t melting already, check out this video of him with a kitten.

Look for PEOPLE’s annual Sexiest Man Alive issue, coming to newsstands Nov. 21!
