When it comes to the decision of fight or flight, sources tell PEOPLE Kourtney Kardashian‘s ex Scott Disick most recently opted for the latter.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, who’d been with Kardashian for nine years, split shortly after pictures surfaced of him partying with L.A.-based stylist Chloe Bartoli in Monte Carlo. Rather than head home to face the music and do some serious relationship damage control, a source says Disick decided to keep the party going.

“He wouldn’t go home, even though people told him to go home to [Kourtney] and his family,” the source tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue of the magazine. “Things were already very tense between him and Kourtney.”

After the compromising photos emerged, causing a firestorm online and undoubtedly back at his and Kardashian’s home in Los Angeles, Disick, 32, said he needed time. “It was one excuse after the other,” says the source. “He said, ‘I just need to stay away for another day to think things through’ or ‘I already have my flight planned.’ The truth is, Scott was terrified.”

Though the couple – parents to Mason Dash, 5, Penelope Scotland, 3, and Reign Aston, 6 months – have made it through rough patches before, including Disick’s recent time in rehab and numerous fights over his partying that played out on air, this time is different. “He was afraid to go and talk to Kourtney because he gets freaked out by confrontation,” says the source. “He should have gone home days ago, and he knew it.”

Despite it meaning the end of his relationship, “Scott is not in a place to apologize,” the source says. “He knows 100 percent what he has done and the damage he has caused. He’s not blind to that. But he doesn’t want to face it.”

In fact, Disick did leave the South of France, but he traveled to Miami rather than L.A., where he shares a home with Kardashian, 36.
