“The first episode is really amazing, but it could be really infuriating for some people,” the actress tells PEOPLE. “I know there was a part of me that got really angry [as a fan.]”
But as an actress, Washington couldn’t be happier.
“It’s been a blast to shoot,” she tells PEOPLE of season 5’s twists and turns now that Olivia and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) have chosen to, as Olivia might say, “stand in the sun” together.
Washington’s costar Katie Lowes simply describes the new season of the hit ABC drama as “hot, hot, hot!”
“It’s unbelievable,” she continues. “Going into season 5, [creator] Shonda Rhimes just continues to deliver the goods. It’s just amazing. I feel like the fans will be very satisfied with all the things they love about Scandal.”

Now that the cast is a few episodes into filming the season, actress Bellamy Young (a.k.a. First Lady Mellie Grant, a.k.a Smelly Mellie) is equally in awe of what the creative team behind the show has been able to accomplish.
“They’ve given us some of the most creative experiences we’ve had on the show so far,” says Young. “Five episodes in, and I can’t believe the terrain we’ve already crossed and the boundaries we’ve already pushed. I just can’t wait for everyone to get to see it.”
And even though she can’t spill any juicy details about what’s to come in season 5, Washington reveals she’s particularly excited about one element of Thursday’s premiere.
“I will say, the fashion in the first episode back is bananas,” she says. “[Costume designer] Lyn Paolo has outdone herself.”
