Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and Grey's Anatomy: 9 Biggest Twists
MCDREAMY IS (MC)MARRIED, GREY'S ANATOMY
Compared to the bus crashes, plane crashes, heartbreak, death, bomb threats and cheating scandals that have rocked Grey's since, the major twist of season 1 – that Derek (Patrick Dempsey) neglected to mention that he was married before hooking up with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) – seems almost quaint by comparison. But make no mistake: Addison (Kate Walsh) waltzing through that lobby all those episodes ago created aftershocks that can still be felt to this day.
FITZ'S SON DIES, SCANDAL
It seemed like we had only just gotten to meet Jerry Grant (Dylan Minnette), before he collapsed on stage during one of Fitz's (Tony Goldwyn) campaign stops and died of bacterial meningitis. And in true Scandal fashion, we were barely able to process that shock before it was revealed that Jerry had actually been murdered. Never a dull day in Shondaland!
REBECCA IS MURDERED, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER
Just when you though the insane, roller coaster season finale of HTGAWM couldn't get any crazier, Wes' (Alfie Enoch) sometime girlfriend Rebecca (Katie Findlay) turned up dead in Annalise's (Viola Davis) basement. Even more shocking? Neither Annalise nor Frank (Charlie Weber) seemed all that shocked to have found her down there …
GEORGE IS JOHN DOE, GREY'S ANATOMY
There have been many (many) heartbreaking deaths on Grey's, but none punched us in the gut harder that the revelation that sweet, lovely George (T.R. Knight) was the John Doe who was fatally injured and brutally disfigured after jumping on front of a bus to save a stranger. If you didn't cry when he traced out that "007" on Meredith's hand, you might actually be dead inside.
MEET OLIVIA'S MOTHER, SCANDAL
Nobody in Shondaland has a relationship with their parents that we would call "functional," but Olivia (Kerry Washington) might have it worst of all, thanks to the shocking discovery that not only was her mother (Khandi Alexander) alive, but she was also a terrorist who made a living selling government secrets. Oh, and she had been kept in a secret prison for years, thus giving both Pope ladies even more issues to handle.
ANNALISE CONFRONTS HER CHEATING (POSSIBLY HOMICIDAL) HUSBAND, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER
"Why is your penis on a dead girl's phone?" It was the line quoted 'round the world. With that one question, perfectly delivered by the magnificent, Emmy-winning Davis, HTGAWM transformed from a standard legal drama into a truly addictive, unpredictable roller coaster of a TV show. (It also taught us never to cheat on the top defense attorney in the country.)
MEREDITH HAS A SISTER, GREY'S ANATOMY
What better way to meet your half-sister for the first time than by discovering that she had ben flirting with your on-again-off-again boyfriend in a bar the night of her mother's funeral? Well, that's how Meredith and her sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh) first found their way into each other's lives. No wonder it took a while for them to warm up to each other.
JAKE KILLS JAMES, SCANDAL
Look, we were all on board with Jake (Scott Foley) and Olivia's relationship, even if there were a few hiccups along the way, but that all changed when he shot James (Dan Bucatinsky) for knowing too much about the death of Vice President Langston (Kate Burton). Sure, he tried to make the situation a tiny bit better by staying with James until the end, but it was a long time before we were able to fully recover from that shocking "carjacking."
FRANK DID IT, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER
Most of the evidence for Lila's (Megan West) murder pointed towards Sam Keating (Tom Verica), and as it turns out, Sam was technically responsible for her death. However, he didn't actually do the deed – that honor actually went to Frank, who strangled Lila on Sam's orders after he found out she was pregnant. Season 2 is going to be insane, you guys.
