"Once I decided it wasn't going to be fun, I lowered my expectations," Shonda Rhimes says of dropping weight

With an entire night dedicated to her deliciously dramatic shows and her first book set to hit shelves in November, Shonda Rhimes is living her best life.

The Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator is also at her healthiest after dropping 117 lbs.

“I just decided I was going to get it together and get healthy,” she told Extra on Saturday at PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly and Essence‘s Shondaland #TGIT Party in Los Angeles. “I have some little kids, and I want to be around them.” (Rhimes has three daughters).

What’s her secret? Rhimes, 45, credits eating better and regular exercise with giving her a slimmer figure, though she says she “hated it the whole time.”

“Once I decided it wasn’t going to be fun, I lowered my expectations,” she explained. “It got kind of easier.”

As for her diet, Rhimes says she hasn’t put any strict restrictions on her food.

“I actually eat everything I want to eat. I tried to make it much less and smaller portions, but what’s happened is you change what your palate wants. I’m suddenly craving fish and salad,” she said, laughing. “It’s upsetting! I’m like, where’s my cake?”

Grey’s Anatomy (8 p.m.), Scandal (9 p.m.) and How to Get Away with Murder (10 p.m.) air Thursday on ABC.
