Throughout the past five years, Olivia Pope has been a fixture in the lives of Scandal audiences every Thursday evening. But when the series reportedly wraps with its upcoming seventh and final season, where can diehard Gladiators expect to see star Kerry Washington land next?

On Wednesday, TVLine first reported that the ABC drama will come to an end with season 7 (it’s currently in its sixth season, but has already been renewed for a seventh).

Shortly before the news broke, PEOPLE caught up with the Scandal star at the Bronx Children’s Museum Gala on the Tribeca Rooftop in New York City, where she opened up about the show possibly coming to an end.

“The last episode was a real shock to me,” Washington, 40, exclusively told PEOPLE about Scandal‘s season 6 finale. “I could never in a million years have imagined what happens to Olivia happening at the end of the season, so I’m really excited about next year and I think people will be very surprised.”

Asked if she thought the seventh season would be the last, the mother of one deferred to series creator, Shonda Rhimes.

“I don’t know, everyone keeps asking, that’s really a Shonda question,” said Washington.

As for what’s next in the professional life of the actress, Washington revealed that she’s “doing a lot of producing now — like my production company did Confirmation last year for HBO — so we have several projects in the works.”

“I’ll just continue to work like I always have,” said Washington, who added that she will “probably go back to do movies that I was doing before.”

Scandal airs Thursdays (9 p.m. ET) on ABC.
