Since Sandra Lee received the devastating news she had breast cancer last March, her boyfriend Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been right by her side.

“He was wonderful, Lee, 49, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue of the New York governor. “Even though he’s closing the legislative session now and was in the heat of all of his work, all work and focus, he never wavered and has always really been available and been there every step of the way.”

The Good Morning America contributor underwent a double mastectomy in May 2015 after she was diagnosed following what she believed to be a routine mammogram.

“It’s a true testament to dedication and loyalty and love,” she says of Cuomo. “There will never be enough time for me to thank him for the last year of support and love.”

Now cancer-free, Lee has changed the way she lives her life.

“You know what it makes you realize? Every day I think, ‘Is what I did today worth a day in my life?’ Because you gave a day of your life for today. So, for me, that’s how I live my life now. You come to the realization of how precious every single day of you life is.”
