Rosie O'Donnell Reflects on Becoming a First-Time Grandmother: It Was 'Really Beautiful'
Rosie O’Donnell has the new grandmother glow.
The SMILF star appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, where she opened up about becoming a first-time grandmother after the birth of her daughter Chelsea’s baby girl.
“It was something really beautiful,” she said. “It’s very trite, but it’s what everyone says — when you’re a grandparent, it’s like [having] a baby times a million. And that’s what it felt like.”
Chelsea welcomed daughter Skylar Rose on Dec. 18 with boyfriend Jacob Bourassa.
“I flew right in… I just missed the birth but I was there right after,” O’Donnell said.
She also talked about meeting her granddaughter just one day after the actress found out about the death of her friend, director Penny Marshall.
“It was a big, big heartbreak when she died, and then my granddaughter was born the next day,” O’Donnell said. “So I got the call that she had passed, and then I got the call [about my granddaughter].”

“It reminded me about the whole circle of life, and to remember every great thing that I had with her and that she really did give me a film career,” she added. “I’ll be eternally grateful.”
Ahead of her granddaughter’s birth, O’Donnell opened up about her relationship with Chelsea after years of estrangement.
“I think with my relationship with my daughter, Chelsea, it really has [gotten stronger] because we went through some really public troubled times,” said the mother of five, who adopted Chelsea as a baby with her then-wife Kelli Carpenter-O’Donnell. “She’s doing better now and we’re both communicating with each other.”
