Today 4 Them: See How the Cast of Rent Live Compares to the 1996 Original Broadway Cast
Anthony Rapp somehow made a striped scarf seem like the pinnacle of artistic expression when he originated the role of neurotic filmmaker Mark, who documents the lives of his friends in gritty 1990s New York. Jordan Fisher, who has acted in Hamilton and Grease: Live, and won Dancing with the Stars season 25, will be holding the camera in the new cast.
Long before "Let It Go," Idina Menzel was inspiring up-and-coming theater kids everywhere with her spirited take on artist Maureen. Vanessa Hudgens, meanwhile, is no stranger to TV musicals (between her High School Musical roots and praised Grease Live! performance as Rizzo), so she's ideal to step into Maureen's boots.
Angel Dumott Schunard
Daphne Rubin-Vega landed her breakout role (and a Tony nomination) for the role of HIV-positive addict and dancer Mimi. Now Tinashe will be going all "Out Tonight" with the part.
Benjamin “Benny” Coffin III
Taye Diggs’ performance as Benny, a former friend who married into money, made him the guy Rent-heads loved to hate - and introduced him to future wife Idina Menzel (they divorced in 2015). Singer-songwriter Mario, best known for his 2004 hit “Let Me Love You," has been featured in films such as Step Up and Freedom Writers.
Fredi Walker-Browne made in an indelible impression in her role as serious-lawyer-turned-girlfriend-of-Maureen in the OBC, and Kiersey Clemons is psyched to take on that part. The actress, who has appeared in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Dope, wrote in an Instagram post, “my gay black heart is no longer inside of my body.”
The struggling musician was originally played by Adam Pascal, who earned a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for his performance. Rising star Brennin Hunt will now take the reins; besides a guest-star spot on an episode of Nashville in 2015, this will be Hunt’s biggest role to date.
Jesse L. Martin originally played the role of the NYU professor who was grappling with the reality of being the oldest person in this group of friends. Brandon Victor Dixon, who nabbed an Emmy nomination for his role in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, should have no trouble taking on the soulful songs Collins is known for.
