Tamra Judge‘s granddaughter Ava was diagnosed with a kidney condition when she was born last February, but the RHOC reality star says despite her health condition, the nearly one-year-old is doing great.

“She’s happy, she’s healthy, and she’s funny,” Judge tells PEOPLE. “She’s just so cute!”

Judge’s son Ryan Vieth and fiancée Sarah Rodriguez welcomed Ava on Feb. 9, 2015, but doctors later diagnosed the baby with a multicystic dysplastic kidney.

“When she was born, there was no sign of a left kidney,” Rodriguez tells PEOPLE. “Because it was a non-functioning kidney it kind of just shriveled up, so it hasn’t disappeared but the tissue is too small to be detected by an ultrasound.”

For now Ava has been getting treatment at a children’s hospital nephrology unit, where she is being monitored every six months to check the functionality and size of her remaining kidney, but the prognosis looks very promising.

“Her right kidney is growing to compensate for both kidneys so it’s a little larger than the other one, but it’s compensating, which is really good,” says Rodriguez.

“They need to make sure whatever took the left kidney it’s not going to do the same thing,” she says. “But so far it’s amazing. The right kidney is doing what it’s supposed to do.

And Rodriguez couldn’t be happier about her daughter’s progress. “She’s perfect,” she says.
