Bethenny Frankel is no stranger to a little controversy, but according to her costar Sonja Morgan, that’s why viewers love her.

“Bethenny can rip you a new one and it keeps it riveting,” Morgan, 52, told PEOPLE Tuesday at the Love Heals 2016 Gala benefiting the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS in New York City.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Frankel’s comments are always well-received – in fact, much the opposite. Since season 8 of The Real Housewives of New York City premiered last month, the unapologetic reality star has been clashing with the women left and right – from arguing with Dorinda Medley over her boyfriend to sparring with new cast member Julianne “Jules” Wainstein.

As for whether Morgan thinks Frankel, 45, ever takes things too far after – notably after she suggested Wainstein has an eating disorder on the show and then refused to back down when asked about it again – Morgan said with a laugh: “She takes it too far with everything. I think that’s why we enjoy watching her.”

“We’re just like, ‘Whoa, foot in mouth and out the back of your head!’ ” added Morgan.

Of 35-year-old Wainstein, Morgan says the newcomer is someone the show hasn’t “seen for a very long time.”

“She’s someone who is young and silly, like myself, who bares her soul and is sensitive, which makes you bear the brunt of a lot of criticism,” Morgan said. “I can relate to that. She’s silly like I am. She can come off arrogant, but sometimes you just have to give someone creative license and I do that certainly for Bethenny and I do that certainly for Jules.”

Morgan has also been taking Wainstein under her wing.

“I’m very protective of her,” she said. “And in an ironic way, even though Bethenny seems so strong, I feel like I need to take her under my wing too, because you know, she is sensitive.”

In fact, Morgan considers herself something of a “defender” for her costars on hit Bravo show.

“I’ve been certainly doing that with Ramona [Singer] for the longest time because she is so seemingly tough but she comes from a place of fear, quite often,” Morgan said. “She’s never stood up for me and I’ve always stood up for her.”

As for Singer, 59, with whom Morgan has had her ups and downs, ultimately the two women are “always going to be like sisters” Morgan said.

“I’m very close to her and LuAnn [de Lesseps], and I feel like I’ll always be connected with Bethenny no matter what,” adds Morgan. “I’m rooting for her.”

The Real Housewives of New York City airs Wednesdays (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.
