Rami Malek is going to the 2016 Emmys for the first time this year and the Mr. Robot star (and first-time nominee) has more than a few reasons to be excited.

“The fact that I’ll be there with the whole Robot gang. That, and I’m sure [host Jimmy] Kimmel’s going to roast some A-listers,” Malek tells PEOPLE. “That’s always good for a few laughs.”

The 35-year-old is up for outstanding lead actor in a drama series while his USA series landed a total of six nods.

“The show has opened a lot of doors for me,” he says. “This is the kind of character you always want to play as an actor. He’s the joker in the deck.”

For Malek, making it big in showbiz has always been a dream.

“When I was younger, I used to lock myself in a room and make up different character voices in my head,” he says. “I thought I could either continue this as a ‘unique’ hobby or parlay it into a career.”

The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards are airing live on Sunday starting at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
