It’s a wedding at least one New Girl fan never would have predicted.

“When I got the first script where Cece and Schmidt hooked up, my jaw hit the floor,” actress Hannah Simone tells PEOPLE of her character getting romantically involved with Max Greenfield‘s on their Fox comedy during the show’s first season, which debuted in 2011.

But now, during the two-part season 5 finale, Cece and Schmidt are getting married – and PEOPLE has some exclusive shots from the big event.

“Schmidt was this big player, but when the audience saw how much he loved Cece, they immediately started rooting for them as a couple,” says Greenfield. “And I’m so glad we’ve been blessed with a show that has been successful enough to last long enough for us to get to this day.”

But, in true sitcom fashion, things don’t necessarily go as planned for Cece and Schmidt.

“The night before the wedding, everyone decides to play an epic game of True American,” Simone says, referring to a complex game created by the central characters in New Girl. “But then, on the day of the wedding, Schmidt isn’t there.”

Fear not, though.

“They do get married,” Greenfield says of his and Simone’s characters. “It was such a great couple weeks of filming. We got to have a lot of amazing costars come back.”

The New Girl season 5 finale – featuring recurring guest stars Megan Fox, Peter Gallagher and more – airs as two 30-minute episodes Tuesday at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
