Naomi Campbell might play a cougar on Fox’s Empire, but the supermodel isn’t exactly a fan of that title.

“I don’t like the word cougar,” Campbell tells PEOPLE.

“For me this is how I look at it: When you love, you love. That’s it. Age is just a number.”

But that doesn’t mean that the British beauty isn’t loving her recurring role on the new musical drama series, in which she plays sultry Camilla, the older mistress of the show’s young Hakeem.

“To be given this opportunity at this point in my life, I am very committed,” she says. “But I’m also having lots of fun with this. It’s not my day job, so to be working with Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard and all these wonderful stars each week, I’m humbled.”

And now, with a hit show under her belt and her modeling career still going strong, at age 44 Campbell says the key to success is simple.

“I think that more than anything you have to enjoy what you do and not take yourself so seriously – if you can look back and say, ‘I had fun, I enjoyed it, no regrets.’ ”

Still, Campbell admits she misses the ’90s, the whirlwind heyday when she, along with fashion superstars Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista, ruled the catwalks.

“I reminisce all the time and I have some great memories,” she says. I think one of my most memorable is when Gianni [Versace] put us out on the runway together to do ‘Freedom.’ That’s a special moment in my life, and it always will be.”
