After a near-death experience, the Dunphys pledge to become newer, better versions of themselves
There’s nothing like a near-death experience to bring a Modern Family together.
In an exclusive clip obtained by PEOPLE, it’s a typical day for the Dunphys – that is, total chaos – when the ABC hit returns from its winter hiatus on Wednesday. And that’s before the family narrowly avoids a car accident.
With the kids yelling in the backseat, Phil (Ty Burrell) blasting music, Claire (Julie Bowen) arguing with Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) over the phone, and Phil hopping on a call himself, it’s total mania as the family – including Manny (Rico Rodriguez) – heads to its favorite pancake place.
Utterly distracted by the mayhem happening inside the car, Phil speeds through an intersection and barely avoids a T-bone collision.
The experience prompts everyone to make a resolution: Claire pledges to become less uptight, Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Alex (Ariel Winter) agree not to fight anymore, Luke (Nolan Gould) resolves to check some items off his bucket list, Phil decides to become a take-action kind of guy and Manny refuses to ride in a car ever again.
If history and that unlikely last vow are any indications, though, it’s probably best not to get too attached to the new-and-improved Family.
Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
