It was the derriere seen by millions. Milo Ventimiglia has garnered critical acclaim for his new NBC family dramedy This Is Us since the premiere in September, during which fans saw the actor’s nearly-naked body in the opening scene.

“When I first read the scene I’m like, ‘This is NBC, I’ll be fully covered and everything,'” Ventimiglia, 39, told the ladies of The Talk on Tuesday. “Then when I showed up for our very first scene, first day of working on the pilot I walk into my trailer and I see flesh colored fabrics in varying sizes. ‘Okay that’s the kind of rodeo we’re doing today so here we go.'”

Costar Mandy Moore pointed out that Ventimiglia prepared minimally before showing his butt onscreen. “I will just say that I observed the table read maybe two or three days before we shot. This one’s ordering pizza!” Moore, 32, revealed. “I remember thinking like as a girl you would be watching everything you ate, I would doing two a day workouts, nope pizza!”

But Ventimiglia shared that he was, in fact, instructed to tone down his amount of exercise so that he can physically get into character as a 36-year-old father of three in the early ’80s.

“This was the first time in my career, in 21 years, where the producers said, ‘Stop working out,'” the star said. “They didn’t want me to work out because they wanted to make sure I didn’t look too modern of a man so when the reveal does happen you understand that Rebecca and Jack are from the past and they look of their time.”

This Is Us airs Tuesdays (9 p.m. ET) on NBC.
