Miley Cyrus won’t be making her debut as a coach on The Voice until season 11, but the singer left her mark on this season’s contestants as a key advisor for the show.

“I didn’t really know what to expect from the show … I didn’t realize how real it was,” she says in a video shared exclusively with PEOPLE. “It’s about making things your own … Being yourself.”

On Tuesday’s episode, the star can be seen guiding the singers as they fight for a spot on the live shows.

“I love being with these artists because we’ve seen little changes made, and it being a new song, a new person,” she says. “You have this platform to bring light to people and to bring hope to people, and I think that’s what this show does.”

“It’s true! I am going to be the newest judge on Season 11 of The Voice,” the “Wrecking Ball” singer wrote on Twitter Friday. Alicia Keys – who has previously served as a mentor on the show – will also a coach, along with Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesday (8 p.m. ET) on NBC.
