Michael Strahan‘s time at Live! may be coming to an end, but the show will always hold a special place in his heart.

“I love Live!, I’ve loved being there four years and I’m not gone,” he told Extra at the Met Gala in New York City Monday. “I’m still part of the Live! family, and I’m always around when they need me. So I’ll be there whenever they call.”

Of his upcoming full-time gig co-anchoring Good Morning America, which will begin in September, Strahan said “it’s a great opportunity” and will be “a great experience.”

As for any tensions with his co-host Kelly Ripa – who sources told PEOPLE was “completely blindsided” by the news and took a week off after finding out he was leaving the show – the former NFL pro, 44, said it’s not his place “to kill rumors.”

“People believe whatever they want to believe and I found out a long time ago … you cannot go through life trying to make people believe what you want them to believe or prove something,” he said.

“They either know or they don’t know. Everybody gets a glimpse of us every day on TV … and they draw their opinion,” he continued. “So if they draw their opinion in a negative way, that’s on them. If they draw it in a positive way, then that’s on them too. All I do is show up and I enjoy myself.”

Strahan also took a moment to express his excitement about recently winning a Daytime Emmy with Ripa.

“How could you not be excited about an Emmy?” he said, before praising the rest of the Live! team. “It’s like winning the Super Bowl. I don’t look at it as just like, it’s for you. … Any award I get now I look at it as a team because you don’t do it by yourself.”

“So it’s a good team award, I think it’s a testament to Live!, and the creativity of that show and the fun that we have,” he added.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday’s episode of the morning talk show, fans expressed their disappointment by booing upon hearing that Strahan’s final show is just 10 days away.

“We’ll remember. We’ll reminisce. We’re going to look back at the fun times we’ve had together,” Ripa, 45, told Strahan.

“So join us for Michael’s Flashback Friday Farewell on Friday the 13th,” she added before starting to laugh about the irony of the date. “You can’t plan this! You literally cannot plan it.”

Live! With Kelly and Michael airs weekdays (check local listings).
