Regis Philbin Wishes Michael Strahan Well Post-Live! Exit: 'Next Stop Could be Washington'
brightcove.createExperiences(); Kelly Ripa‘s former Live! co-host Regis Philbin is among those who wish Michael Strahan well after new broke on Tuesday that Ripa’s current Live! co-host is leaving the show to expand his role on Good Morning America.
In a statement exclusively shared with PEOPLE, Philbin noted, “Years ago I interviewed Michael Strahan on my show, and I asked him what he will do when he leaves the Giants. He said, ‘I want your job,’ and years later he got it. Now he’s moving on to GMA. Next stop could be Washington.”
Philbin, 84, has previously admitted that he and Ripa – who worked side by side for nearly a decade – have not spoken since his departure from the show in November 2011.
“I haven’t seen her. I don’t see her,” the 84-year-old told Hoda Kotb last year on The Hoda Show! on SiriusXM satellite radio.
As for Ripa, 45, sources say she’s not taking the news of Strahan’s departure well. She did not take her co-hosting seat on Wednesday’s episode of Live!, and a source told PEOPLE she hasn’t told ABC when she will return.
A source told PEOPLE Ripa “was completely blindsided …. It all happened very quickly.” Another insider added that “she was pissed two years ago when he was asked to do just two days a week on GMA.”
As for Strahan, he addressed the fact that he’s “been in the news lately” on Wednesday’s broadcast, saying, “Yes, I am leaving this show. I’m going to go over to GMA full-time. Which is going to happen in September. And it’s the same channel!”
He ended the announcement with a message to his co-host saying, “Kelly, I thank you. I love you and everyone else here at Live!, and I’m not going to cry on TV, momma, I promise you.”
Live! With Kelly and Michael airs weekdays (check local listings).
