It has been two years since the unexpected passing of Joan Rivers, but her presence is still felt.

Melissa, daughter of the late fashion mogul, stopped by PEOPLE Now and opened up about how she and her son commemorated Joan’s second anniversary.

“Everyone is all like, ‘Oh, what did you guys do?’ Well, we lit our memorial candle, thought about her, said our little prayer and went on our way,” she admitted. “I mean, my mother was always one about moving forward and the last thing she would want is for my son or me to be living in the past.”

Joan was 81 at the time of her death. The comedian had stopped breathing while undergoing a surgical procedure on her vocal cords and was rushed from the clinic to Mount Sinai Hospital. There, she was placed in a medically induced coma and died a week later on Sept. 4, 2014.

“So, it’s always very important to me that we … on those days that we spend time together and we have a nice day,” Melissa, 48, added. “And do something together that’s positive, good and fun … that at the end of that day we can say ‘We love her and miss her, but we’re good.’ ”
