"I think we really started to find our footing," Melissa Rivers says of Fashion Police

After a night of sheer, sparkly and barely there outfits at the American Music Awards, Fashion Police is coming back to bust stars on their style don’ts.

Melissa Rivers replaced her late mother Joan Rivers as host on the show this year, and she tells PEOPLE she’s “enjoying” the job after some bumps. (Kathy Griffin and Kelly Osbourne both quit as panelists after Giuliana Rancic‘s controversial joke about Zendaya‘s dreadlocks.)

“I think we really started to find our footing those last few episodes that I hosted. So now that we have our feet underneath us, I think we can start to explore creatively a little bit more,” says Melissa, who executive-produces the series, too.

Joan, 81, died in September 2014 after she stopped breathing during vocal chord surgery. A comedy icon, she reinvented the red carpet interview by coining the question, “Who are you wearing?”

So what would Joan’s favorite new look from the last year be?

“Oh, she’d be loving the very romantic, sort of Edwardian trend that has come in,” says Melissa, 47. “She would be loving that!”

As for what styles would earn Joan’s infamously acerbic criticism?

“Oh god,” says Melissa, laughing. “Too many to even start to rattle off to you!”

Fashion Police airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET on E!
