Live from New York, we have a new co-anchor for Weekend Update!

Michael Che, a writer on Saturday Night Live last season and a correspondent for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, will join Colin Jost as co-host of the popular SNL segment – replacing Cecily Strong, who will now have more time to work on sketches.

“Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny,” showrunner Lorne Michaels tells The New York Times. “It’s always difficult to make changes and make Update different from what’s gone before.”

Che, 31, is a veteran standup comic and may be best known recently for a biting Daily Show sketch in August about trying to find a safe place from which to report on the shooting of a black teenager.

While praising Strong’s talents, Michaels said Weekend Update was uneven last season, as she was paired first with Seth Meyers (before he took the reins of Late Night with Seth Meyers) and then with Jost.

Che and Jost struck up a friendship in the writers’ room last season, Michaels added.

“It struggled to find an identity last season,” Michaels said of Weekend Update. “Because what had come before had been pretty brilliant.”
