'Everyone Knew' Matt Lauer 'Cheated On' Wife, but Misconduct Allegations Are 'a Shock': Sources

Matt Lauer was terminated from the Today show over allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace"

Ousted Today host Matt Lauer had multiple extramarital affairs, sources allege to PEOPLE.

In the wake of Lauer’s termination over allegations of “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace, several insiders tell PEOPLE that the veteran morning host was allegedly often unfaithful to his wife of 19 years, Annette Roque. Lauer’s reps are not commenting.

“He regularly cheated on his wife,” one source claims. “Everyone knew. His wife lives in the Hamptons and he lives in the city, but we never heard he made unwanted moves.”

A former Today staffer echoes the first source’s claims, telling PEOPLE, “Everyone on staff knew he cheated regularly on his wife.”

“That wasn’t a secret, but sexual [misconduct] is a shock,” adds the former Today staff member. “He was friendly and approachable with everyone, and was very well-liked.”

Additionally, a source with knowledge of some aspects of the situation tells PEOPLE that “there was most definitely more than one” affair and alleges that “they were never with anyone whom [Lauer] didn’t have significant seniority over.”

Still, the third source adds, “He wasn’t a lech and he wasn’t known as someone who would corner you or retaliate against you if you spurned him or someone who would lure you into his dressing room.”

On Wednesday morning, Savannah Guthrie, Lauer’s Today co-anchor, announced his firing by reading a statement from Andrew Lack, chairman of NBC News.

“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment,” Lack said in the statement. “While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”

A source told PEOPLE that Lauer was fired after alleged inappropriate sexual behavior throughout 2014, including at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, came to light when an NBC staffer filed a complaint on Monday.

Lauer and Roque’s relationship has faced scrutiny in the public eye before. The model briefly filed for divorce in 2006, and in 2010, the couple refuted reports that they had split and Lauer had moved out of the family’s apartment, calling the claims “a work of fiction.”

Lauer told PEOPLE in an interview at the time that there had been difficulties in their marriage, saying, “Have we had a completely perfect, easy marriage? No.”

“But the stories you’ve read over the years are not true,” Lauer said, adding, “The accusations [of infidelity] are ridiculous and I’m not going to [dignify] them with an answer. It’s not true.”
