Matt Lauer: Is He Leaving the Today Show?
Reports surface that the anchor doesn't plan to renew his gig when his contract expires at the end of 2012
It’s been a week of reported shakeups for TV journalists.
Fresh of the heels of news that Meredith Vieira may not renew her contract at Today once it expires later this year, reports have surfaced that her co-host, Matt Lauer, will also step down from his position at the NBC morning show.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Lauer, 53, has already notified his NBC bosses that he plans to leave the show he’s hosted since 1997 when his contract expires on Dec. 31, 2012.
The Today show released a statement Wednesday, saying, “There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it’s not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and Today.”
Also reportedly on the move: Lauer’s former Today co-host Katie Couric, who is said to be planning to leave her news anchor job at CBS Evening News.
