Tanner and Jade (Roper) Tolbert fell in love on Bachelor in Paradise and tied the knot on national television last February. Now as the duo returns to the small screen, the fireworks aren’t quite as romantic.
The Tolberts are joining four other couples to work on marriage problems on this season of WEtv’s Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars, and they sat down with PEOPLE Now to open up about the issues they’ll be confronting in couples therapy.
“I shut down at anger,” reveals Jade, while Tanner admits to a “bad temper and mean mouth.”
But through the show, they’ve been able to iron out some of their issues: “He’s kind of learned how to effectively communicate with me and reach me,” explains Jade. “And I’ve been able to effectively communicate better with you so I can reach you, because he shuts down too on certain things.”
So what was it like returning to the TV screen to swap in butterflies for marriage trials?
“I was definitely nervous because on the show we met on, its all roses and happiness,” acknowledges Tanner. “This airs a different light on the relationship. But I think everyone that is married or in a serious relationship, they have the good and the bad. And, you know, it’s important to work on the bad to make it a better relationship going forward.”
Falling in love on TV can create its own pressures, and Jade hopes that she can show viewers that marriage is more than champagne and hot tubs.
“I think there’s a lot of pressure, people are like, ‘Oh we look to you for inspiration, you’re our role models, you’re what love should be,’ ” says Jade. “We hope that people can still look and be like, ‘Oh gosh, they have problems just like we do, and that’s inspirational as well.’ ”
Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars premieres Friday at 9 p.m. ET on WEtv.
