Mark Salling has been fired from his upcoming miniseries Gods and Secrets, after a federal grand jury indicted the 33-year-old actor on child pornography charges.

Executive producer Adi Shankar, who makes his directorial debut with series, said in a statement posted to his Facebook page on Tuesday that his project will be moving forward without Salling.

“He has been cut from the miniseries,” Shankar wrote. “I will personally be paying for the reshoots, and I hope that Mark finds inner peace.”

The director went on to explain that a percentage of the profits from his project would be donated to a charity for abused children.

“Hopefully some good will come of all of this,” he said. “The innocence of our planet’s children is something that must be protected at all costs. As entertainers, our role is to be the ‘conscience of humanity.’ ”

The firing comes days after the latest development in Salling’s ongoing case, which began last Dec. 29 when the actor was taken into custody after the Los Angeles Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children unit obtained a search warrant for his home in Sunland, California.

On Friday, the Department of Justice issued a release stating that Salling, through his attorney, has agreed to surrender to federal authorities on June 3 to face charges of receiving and possessing videos and still images child pornography involving young girls on his laptop computer and flash memory drive.

He is expected to be arraigned on the indictment on that date, the release states.

The release also states that investigators are continuing to review the material on the laptop, a hard drive, and a USB flash drive seized from Salling’s residence – which allegedly contained thousands of images and videos depicting child pornography.

PEOPLE’s calls and emails to Alan Eisner, Salling’s attorney, were not immediately returned.

Previously, Shankar told E! News that Salling would remain with the Gods and Secrets until “all the facts [arrived], but Shankar also said he would “immediately take action” if “these allegations are true.”

Salling was best known for playing Noah “Puck” Puckerman on Ryan Murphy’s hit Fox musical series Glee, which from 2009-15.

Back in January 2013, Salling was sued by ex-girlfriend Roxanne Gorzela for sexual battery, assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence. Gorzela eventually dropped the sexual battery claim – which alleged that Salling pushed her to the ground during an argument and forcing her to have sex without a condom – after Salling agreed to pay her about $2.7 million

In December, a close friend of the actor told PEOPLE, “This isn’t the guy I know at all. I have to believe his computer was hacked.”

According to Department of Justice’s release on Friday, receiving child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years. Possessing child pornography also carries a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
