Mad Men‘s Kit Williamson is getting married.

The actor, who played Ed on the show, “is sad the series is nearing its end but he’s also looking ahead to a bright future that includes marriage to his fiancé John Halbach,” his rep tells PEOPLE in a statement.

Williamson, 29, hails from Mississippi, a state where gay marriage is not yet fully legal.

“We all have a right to love, a right to happiness and a right to find a partner in life,” he tells PEOPLE.

Being a part of Mad Men “held a mirror up to the social inequalities of the ’60s, made him see the parallels of Mississippi’s opposition to interracial marriage then to its opposition to gay marriage today. His Mad Men character, Ed Gifford, would not have been able to legally marry a woman of color,” his rep says.
