Shannen Doherty Fights Back Tears After Luke Perry's Reported Stroke: 'He's Going to Be Great'
Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry played love interests on Beverly Hills, 90210
The 47-year-old actress — who played Perry’s love interest on the 1990s show — was attending The Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation’s Compassion Project Gala in Los Angeles when she broke into tears, reflecting on Perry’s condition.
“I love him, and he’s going to be great,” Doherty said, adding that she has reached out to Perry. “I will not talk about how he’s doing because it’s between the two of us.”
Perry, 52, was hospitalized on Feb. 27 after paramedics were dispatched to the Riverdale star’s home in Sherman Oaks, California, according to TMZ. The call reportedly came into the fire department for someone suffering a stroke. As of March 1, Perry was still hospitalized, his rep confirmed to PEOPLE. His current condition is unclear.
Doherty was one of the first stars to post about Perry, sharing a caption-less Instagram of the two hugging during their time on the teen drama together.
Her support of Perry shouldn’t come as a surprise. Though she left Beverly Hills, 90210 back in 1994 amid rumors of conflict, Perry has publicly stood by Doherty — especially during her battle with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in February 2015.
“None of us are up here today without Shannen,” Perry said in at the Beverly Hills, 90210 reunion at REwind Con in November 2016. “She’s been through a lot. She’s not doing well right now but sometimes her contributions are minimized.”
“She’s been thrown under the bus,” he continued. “I’ve been accused of driving it. But she’s a very big part of the success of this show. She taught me a lot. I’m glad she was my scene partner. She was great at what she did in the character with me.”
Beverly Hills, 90210 star Ian Ziering also shared an Instagram regarding the “shocking news,” tweeting that “no words can express what my heart feels hearing today’s shocking news. Let us all say a prayer for his speedy recovery.”
News of Perry’s hospitalization came hours after Fox announced a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot. Though his original costars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Ziering have all signed on to the new project, Perry did not.
Perry currently stars as Archie’s (KJ Apa) dad, Fred Andrews, on the CW’s Riverdale. According to TMZ, he had been shooting episodes recently in L.A. on the Warner Bros. lot. (Riverdale‘s main set is in Vancouver, Canada.)
