Luke Perry's Daughter Rushed Back from Africa When He Had a Stroke: Source

Luke Perry died Monday after suffering a massive stroke, his rep confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE

Luke Perry’s daughter Sophie made a quick return from a trip abroad to be by her father’s side after he suffered a massive stroke last week.

A source tells PEOPLE that Sophie, 18, was in Africa when her father fell ill, and rushed to Los Angeles before his death Monday at age 52.

Sophie’s Instagram shows she recently spent a month in Malawi, and she last posted a photo Feb. 27 of a dirt road with mountains in the background.

“It’s been a month and Malawi has gifted me with so so much joy, beauty, and malaria,” she wrote. “Wouldn’t trade it 💛💛.”

She had been in Africa since at least Jan. 29, when she posted a photo to Instagram announcing her arrival.

“Hello y’all I finally made it to Malawi,” she wrote. “Dramatic post about missing my friends is soon to come!”

Sophie was born to Perry and ex-wife Minnie Sharp in 2000, three years after older brother Jack.

She occasionally shared photos that showed her bond with her father to social media, including an October shot that featured them in matching ugly footwear.

“My old man and I are truly such fashion icons… I mean… CMON,” she joked.

She also shared an adorable photo from her prom in June, featuring Perry kissing her on the cheek.

The Riverdale star was “under observation” in the hospital for five days before he died Monday.

His publicist said in a statement he was surrounded by friends and family, including Sophie and Jack, Sharp and fiancée Wendy Madison Bauer.

In lieu of flowers, the Perry family asks that donations be made to Fight Colorectal Cancer and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
